Kinsale Town – Places to visit

Places to Visit when you stay at Tierneys Kinsale

It’s winter and Christmas is coming….

Why not visit Kinsale Town? We are just 20 minutes drive from Cork City. Kinsale is known as the foodie capital of Ireland and is filled with fabulous little boutiques, art galleries, historic buildings and of course the River Bandon.

Tierneys Guest House is situated in the heart of Kinsale Town. When you stay with us you have immediate access to many facilities, shops and tourists sites. Below are some suggestions:

Start your morning with a wonderful Breakfast!

Tierneys is not a B&B! However, we are on the door step of some of the most famous and popular cafes in South Ireland. You will be spoiled for choice.

After your big breakfast, take a nice stroll down to the River Bandon. There are plenty of directions and walk paths to follow. Whatever your choice in direction, you won’t be dissapointed. After all, Kinsale is the first stop on the famous Irish Wild Atlantic Way….

After a lovely walk around the township, visiting famous art galleries, boutiques, book shops – why not stop somewhere locally famous for lunch!

The White Lady Hotel’s Sunday Lunch.

The White Lady Hotel Kinsale is located on O’Connel Street. It has an award winning restaurant and is situated 2 minutes walk from the River Bandon – some images below:

Desmond Castle

After your delicious lunch, take a quick walk down to the River Bandon and follow it towards the centre of Kinsale Town to:

Desmond Castle, Cork St, Sleveen, Kinsale, Co. Cork.
There you will find the historic Castle. The castle was built as the Customs House for Kinsale about the year 1500 by Maurice FitzGerald, 9th Earl of Desmond. It was initially used as a Customs House and was subsequently converted into a naval prison in the 1640s. It remained a prison until the great Irish famine where it became a workhouse.

In 1938, it was taken into government hands, and in the 1990’s was restored and opened to the public.

We’ll after this you will no doubt be a little tired, so we recommend a nice late afternoon nap back at Tierney’s Guest House before you consider your evening plans.

James Fort Kinsale

James Fort is an early 17th century pentagonal fort located on Castlepark peninsula in Kinsale harbour.

It is located in Kinsale on the River Bandon.  The fort acted as a defense to boats and enemies arriving via the ocean.

Truly a breathtaking experience for anyone wanting to immerse themselves in Irish history.

Stay at Tierneys Guest House Kinsale and take the beautiful walk along the river for your excursion.
